3 (Simple) Ways to Start Low Waste Living

I set several goals for myself going into 2019 for more sustainable ways of living. A few big things for me were focusing on reducing my paper/plastic waste, shopping in bulk instead of purchasing single-use bags of common items that can be taken home in reusable bags & glass jars, and creating DIY solutions for products that I’d regularly purchase.

If you’re looking to make some very simple but impactful changes, these are what I’ve found to be easiest to jumpstart my low waste journey!

  1. Unpaper Towels

I linked the unpaper towels that I got! Apparently they’re incredibly durable & last for 3 years or so.

You can bleach them (my favorite eco-friendly bleach is from Seventh Generation) & just throw them in the wash & keep using.

Also, can we talk about the fact that you’ll save so much money? On average, I’d say I used to spend about $15 a month on paper towels ($180 a year) & now have a set that cost $29 for the next 3 years. That’s virtually 80¢ a month.

2. Bulk Shopping

If you already have some mason jars or reusable bags, perfect! It’s most beneficial to use what you already have to stock up on bulk but if not it’s easy enough to grab some at the store.

You can purchase flours, nuts, rice, spices, seasonings & dressings in bulk at Whole Foods or your local Co-Op.

3. DIY Hair Products

I started making all of my own shampoo, conditioner, dry shampoo, facial serum & hair detangler last year with super basic household products!

I’ve also gotten to a place with my hair where I only have to wash it 2-3 times a month. It just doesn’t get oily anymore, likely because I’m not washing it with damaging ingredients like sulfates, parabens or other carcinogens. If you have super thick hair like me, washing it is quite a production & it takes like 9 hours to fully dry, so washing it as infrequently as possible is a plus!
